Cataract Surgery Portland

Inside our eyes, we have a natural lens. The lens bends (refracts) light rays that come into the eye to help us see. The lens should be clear. If you have a cataract, your lens has become cloudy. It is like looking through a foggy or dusty car windshield. Things look blurry, hazy or less colorful with a cataract.

Protecting your eyes from sunlight and avoiding smoking are the best way to prevent cataracts. Wear sunglasses that screen out the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light rays. You may also wear regular eyeglasses that have a clear, anti-UV coating.

Cataract Surgery Portland

Treatment of Cataract

Prior to cataract surgery, our office will perform a cataract evaluation to determine if you qualify for cataract extraction surgery.

Cataract extraction surgery is the only way to remove cataracts.

You should consider surgery when cataracts keep you from doing things you want or need to do.

During cataract surgery, our surgeon will remove the cloudy natural lens and replace it with an artificial lens implant. This new lens is called an intraocular lens implant (or IOL). When you decide to have cataract surgery and have a cataract evaluation, our surgeon will determine your lens implant options and discuss with you about IOLs and how they work.

Lens Implant Options at NELSI

NELSI offers multiple high quality implant options for patients to choose from. Our surgeon will determine and discuss your lens implants options in detail during your cataract surgery evaluation. Our team will discuss insurance coverage, specifics and lens costs at the conclusion of your cataract surgery evaluation.

  1. Monofocal lens implants are covered by insurance. 'Monofocal' lens implants allow patients to see clearly at one distance, most patients choose to have their distance vision corrected and wear readers for close up vision.
  2. Monofocal lens implants for monovision are covered by insurance. On occasion, patients who wear 'monovision' contact lenses currently choose to have one eye implant for distance and the other eye implant for near.
  3. Multifocal lens implants (PanOptix and PanOptix Pro) are specialty lens implants. 'Multifocal' lens implants allow for vision at multiple distances, typically including distance and near vision.
  4. Toric or Astigmatism lens implants are specialty lens implants. 'Toric' lens implants correct astigmatism to allow for improved clarity of vision. Our surgeon will determine and communicate with you, if you could benefit from a toric lens implant on the day of your evaluation.
